How We Support

Case Management

Together & Free’s case managers help families navigate the complex legal and social systems as they pursue their asylum claims in the United States, and to ensure that they have access to the resources and support they need to provide stability to their families.

Case managers help coordinate access to housing, food, medical care, legal representation, education, and employment. They also serve as a liaison between families and other service providers, such as lawyers, healthcare providers, and social workers.

Today, Together & Free supports over 1,200 families affected by federal immigration policies, namely the Zero Tolerance Policy, Title 42 restrictions, the Remain in Mexico policy and now the Asylum Ban.  Since 2022, Together & Free has provided the following support:

  • Over 350 families have received rental assistance.

  • Nearly 450 families have accessed emergency food assistance.

  • Nearly 250 families have received school enrollment support.

  • Over 150 families have received clothing.

  • Over 100 families have accessed transportation for reunification or to attend legal appointments.

  • Over 300 families have received assistance in filing for work permits.

  • Over 100 families have received legal assistance in asylum proceedings or for return to the United States.

Legal Services

Together & Free offers critical immigration support for families who have upcoming court hearings or face threats of deportation while simultaneously helping families secure full legal representation. Our work includes:

  • Legal Screenings & Placements: We assess families’ asylum cases and place them with pro bono legal counsel.

  • Humanitarian Parole: We help complete and file necessary paperwork for families in the United States and abroad so that they can gain entry to the United States under President Biden’s Family Reunification Task Force.

  • Work Permits: Our caseworkers help expedite work permits applications and renewals so that parents can begin working in the United States and provide housing, food, and other necessities for their families.

  • Motions to Reopen: Our legal team helps families file to re-open their immigration cases when they have been unfairly ordered removed

Asylum Cases: We advise families without legal representation on how to seek a continuance or request administrative closure at their upcoming hearings while we work to identify pro bono counsel.

Policy & Advocacy

Together & Free works with federal agencies, members of Congress, and partner advocacy organizations to support policies that prioritize family integrity and safety at the border. With knowledge gained through our case management work with families, we provide policymakers and government agencies with critical feedback on how to keep families intact and safe through the immigration process. Since we work with vulnerable populations at the border we are able to help identify potential plaintiffs for federal litigation. We also work directly with DHS and CBP to improve existing systems and access for those who need it most.

Highlights of our advocacy efforts include:

  • Pilot Programs: We helped design and implement the original pilot program for reunifying families separated under the Zero Tolerance Policy.

  • Federal Contracts: We continue to advocate directly with federal agencies for stronger protections for returning families and consult on how best to implement and proceed with federal contracts that help reunifying families.

  • Expansion of Federal Relief: Most recently, Together & Free successfully advocated for the inclusion of separated families with U.S. citizen children in the Ms. L class settlement.  We are now working to ensure that those parents are identified and given the opportunity to reunify with their children in the United States.

  • Direct Advocacy: Coordinating with CRCL, CBP and DHS, we report back conditions at the border and propose solutions to mitigate difficult conditions that vulnerable populations face due to the asylum ban.
