Climate Displacement

The world is witnessing an unprecedented climate crisis. Extreme weather events, prolonged drought and sea-level rise have disrupted communities and ecosystems, rendering communities unliveable without access to food and water. Climate change has weakened governments and emboldened violent non-state actors forcing vulnerable populations to seek refuge in the United States.

Currently international and US law does not recognize asylum based on climate displacement. Together & Free and the National Immigration Project are working together to build a model framework for climate based asylum claims. Our focus is on indigenous populations affected by the intersection of climate change and land dispossession.
